I just have to say I love the vintage Christmas stuff over at etsy:
Ok. Teared up a little there. Christmas. Grandparents. Wish my kids could have known them like I did. Maybe they would then quit asking me why I like John Deere & old tractors so much, for one thing.
Moving on...
I used to be fascinated with these decorations. Just riveted. Don't know why. I used to study them to try to figure out what they were made of. I got in trouble for picking one of them apart the one time I ever got close to one. After that I was watched like a hawk when I was in close proximity to one. I think it's because they were called "Popcorn Decorations" or melted popcorn something and I was trying to figure out if it was really made of popcorn and how they made it. I know I put some in my mouth. It kind of tasted like what I thought Japan would taste like. Not being rude or racist here, I was very very intrigued with many imports from Japan when I was a little kid. My grandpa loved Chinese food, he told me people in different countries ate different food. Chinese food, Japanese food, Korean food, Greek food, Italian food...ok, get it? The funniest part of all is that they were made in the U.S. (good old U.S. of A. produced!) and my grandpa thought since they were made of plastic that they were imported from Japan. He was a WW II Navy veteran & Pearl Harbor survivor people and yes, I heard the term "JapCrap" quite a bit in my early years.
These are now called "Popcorn Art" or melted plastic, melted popcorn plastic etc... so that jibes with what I can remember. These decorations are still somewhat nostalgic to me but not enough to drop anything over 5 bucks on them. Truthfully, I think the reason why I'm not a big fan of these is they look like a major bitch to clean and I'm not hanging on to grubby holiday decorations. These are nice and clean right now but grubby is what happens when you put them up/use them. And why would I have them if I wasn't going to display them? I think it's the automatic vision of me in yellow kitchen gloves standing over a bucket of dirty water and holding an old toothbrush scrubbing the gunk (you put it up, it's gonna get dirt/dust/grime in it) out of one these that stops me from collecting these. That and they didn't taste very good then, I'm sure the flavor has not improved in the following 4 plus decades. Haha-just kidding.
Getting time to wrap this up so I'll only do a couple more...
These remind me of my Aunt, my mom's youngest sibling. We lost her in December 2001, almost to the day of my late grandfather's birthday. Every Christmas has been a little colder since and I miss her & my grandpa very much this time of year. She loved the holidays and was very crafty and made ceramics and painted them. I loved her very much. And like Forest Gump says: "That's all I have to say about that."
OK, last one:
Absolutely LOVE these! Granny had some of these too. We actually used them for YEARS. They are really nice quality and everyone only got one for their dinner, (lol) you spilled, you got a plain one. That of course, is how they lasted so long. That and it was a HUGE box :) Oh. The memories :)
Wrapping this up now as it's getting close to leaving time. What a fun morning with lots of memories, both happy and sad. It was fun though, in fact it was almost as fun in its own way as Surfin' Sundays!
Later!
