Question of the Week # 75
Today is our kick-off to start the preparations for our family's Thanksgiving gathering on Thursday. The turkey is in the bottom of the fridge to thaw, baking will be started tomorrow and other basic prep work for menu items will be completed in the next three days. It is a big deal for us this year as we get to go to my sister's house and I get to stay for several days and visit. My nieces and nephew have all about driven my sister nuts constantly asking when are we going to be there. She knows they're just excited and to tell the truth, I am too LOL.
Many people celebrate Thanksgiving day and take the time to give thanks, some just do not so on the traditional U.S. Thanksgiving day or do celebrate their meal of thanks without the good old traditional turkey or other dishes that have associations with the historical and fabled "Indians and Pilgrims" first meal of Thanksgiving.
Some have traditional ethnic dishes that they make for this day and some do not even prepare a meal but still give thanks. I have friends of Basque ancestry who celebrate Thanksgiving and their meal reflects a mixing of cultures and traditions that reminds me yet again why the U.S. has been called "the great American melting pot".
My family is of Irish, Scandinavian and Native American descent and in our house we do have some special traditional dishes we prepare for our meal of Thanksgiving that we really look forward to and rarely eat the rest of the year.
We give Thanks daily in our home but I'm really looking forward to gathering with my family for this special meal.
This year because things are tight budget-wise and I am just not up to that much cooking we will be forgoing some of our usual items and keeping it pretty basic.
Some of the items we will eat on Thursday we made sure to gather in advance (wild blackberries, chantrelle mushrooms and venison) and freeze so we would have them specifically for this meal. Friends and family who come for Thanksgiving dinner will usually bring a favored dish of their own to share as well.
Do you celebrate Thanksgiving? And if so, how do you celebrate?
Do you prepare a meal or just have a gathering or go out?
And what is on your menu for Thanksgiving?
What are some "traditional" Thanksgiving or celebration dishes in your family?
Looking forward to hearing your answers!

Happy Monday to all :)
