Surfing Sunday 1.20.13

Ok, here we are again for surfing Sunday, I being exceedingly well rested, especially for me---I didn't get out of bed until 8 a.m and had pretty much uninterrupted (only got up twice) sleep for *almost* eight hours. It might not sound like anything special to you, but for me, that's AWESOME, lol.

I've got my coffee started and I'm not exactly jumping for joy but I am feeling pretty dang good :)

First off...How to Build my 50 Dollar Greenhouse

I had to go check this out since this is the same shape greenhouse as mine (mine is metal pipe) and I was wondering about beds etc. inside, the door issue and what he used to cover his with and how. He spent more than 50 though...or he would "today" anyway, lol. Other than that, nice, it gave me some ideas on where to situate mine and what I might try for the covering. I want to get this done by the end of February since my frame is sitting in a pile under one of the huge cedar trees over by the fire pit and every time I pass it I get a pang that it's not up yet. I might be lazy though and instead of beds like the picture above just go ahead and put in the tables and get some straw/hay bales to stack on the sides since it would make the planting area a little more accessible for me with my back or lack of back I should say... I'm just hungering for fresh tomatoes and salad fixings...plus I want to get my herb garden established since the pots haven't been changed etc. since the move. It's rough (and spendy) trying to find good seasonings at the store when you're so used (SPOILED, I know, lol) to growing your own.

All this greenhouse planning and perusing made me itchy to start planting but I wanted to do some research since I was on the coast so long I need a refresher course for planting inland. Still miss the beach...sigh...ok, ok...back to what I was doing, lol.

I went over to ehow and found this lovely article with various helpful link for local planting information:
When to plant your vegetable garden in Washington state
It has some great information and plenty of links to explore. I'm really looking forward to spring!

Next up...stumbled across this lovely picture of an organized tool/supply area in a blog post on Never Without and it got me dreaming so I earmarked it for later reading. I saved the picture for inspiration, it always interests me to see how other people manage their tool and supply storage.

This might work for me if it was only me using MY STUFF but alas, my son can't seem to put a tool away for the life of him. I think he gets that from his grandmother. Hmmm...and grandfather. Really I do. He can't put away anything and I effen hate it! WHERE'S MY...(insert tool or supply here)??? Oh...did you look...(he names the place he was last at with it). NO! I'm looking in the spot where it SHOULD be... Grrr....I really *hate* hunting for MY STUFF. Maybe it comes from growing up the oldest in a family of six who didn't have anything. My parents had money, they just didn't spend it on kids. I like to take care of my tools because I didn't have *anything* growing up and when I did get something some time, I had to share. So, at my advanced age, I have a problem with sharing NOW. I think it has to do with the fact that he has his own tools but still takes my stuff and I always thought (silly me) when I was a kid that when I was a grown up my stuff (my tools) would be alllllllll mine and God help the twerp who doesn't put them back. Yeah. Still working on that...but as for this picture: it's a dream now but reality is on its way...someday very soon I will have organized chaos (still chaos, yes, but ORGANIZED) in my shop. Since my son has his own shop, I don't care what he does in there, he just better leave my stuff alone. He asked me for a small needle nose pliers last week for a little job that didn't seem fraught with danger. I loaned them and less than 2 minutes later...uh...I'm so sorry about your pliers...he'd broken them. In half.

Don't.

Ask.

Frankly, I would've given him the really crappy pair if I'd known and just not worried about it. But...see, he has his own, he just *can't* find them. Well...pffffffft!

Moving on...

I found out about the Skagit Eagle Festival and it's too late this year but I'd like to make plans for next year maybe :) It would be (in theory) a really nice mid-winter break. The festival lasts all month with activities every weekend throughout January with plenty of eagle watching as well. I really liked this page as it had a lot of fun links---I checked out the geocache link from this page very thoroughly as it has some fun maps and  I found myself zooming in and out of the Olympic Penn. and checking out all the back roads. Makes me want to go out but I know there's still too much snow in them thar hills right now...sigh...still, an informative and fun page: Skagit Eagle Festival in Concrete, WA

Hey, we're over halfway done here and it's only 10:30! Not bad! I have some cooking and artsyfartsy stuff scheduled to do a little later so that's all looking right on time :) I love it when a plan comes together...

OK, I came across this pic of this beautiful little tree house on pinterest and the link led me to the blog with the story of  The Hemloft and some amazing pictures and video.

I love it but I still think the guy was pretty ballsy building on public/crown land but then, you gotta do what you gotta do. When the need to build becomes a compulsion...it's a siren call and to try to avoid it is to fail in an entirely different way. Just go for it! Admirable but hard to understand the ability to "let its fate be determined by fate". Seems kind of casual attitude after so much sweat equity but then again, I know intense I get with a project and then when it's done I just give it away so...uh...yeah, lol, there ya go. This is quite the finished work though :)

I was reading all the comments and marveling how the stereotypical view of most Canadians being extremely nice was completely shot to shit in those comments. Lots of anti-American comments on there. There was one guy who...wow. Well. Jealous much? and of what? This guy, who happens to be a Canadian guy built this beautiful thing, and someone suggested it go in a museum. The museum mentioned is in the US because it is a CRAFT museum and that is what the person who mentioned it knew about. The backlash was really a rant. I was embarrassed at the ignorance and well, bitterness. Really dude? Do you really think US citizens would claim it for their own? And Especially after he got it published in a wonderfully glossy international design magazine? LOL. Anyway, *what* an eyeopener there...still reading the comments I came across a link for this guy's blog:

Little House on the Hill

and I just loved it. It reminds me of when my Grandpa was building his house (much bigger than this wonderful cabin) and when we would work on it on the weekends and evenings when he got home from work before dark (weather permitting of course). Which (of course) made me start thinking about the property in Yelm...and the barn. Oh, the barn... feeding the cows..."come Babes, COME BABES!..." and the tractor trips... It's been 29 years. Still miss my Gramps. Every. Day.

And like Forest said...that's all I have to say about that...(for now).

Lastly, because we're on the final leg here and I do have that rule about eating breakfast before noon (see why I gotta save surfing for Sundays? I'm going to have brunch here in a bit but I really don't know where the last hour went, lol.

I wanted to look up this: Apple, Bacon and Onion Pizza

at A Hint of Honey blog to see what the ingredients entail. I love pizza and I'm thinking this isn't going to be an exception in my love affair. I'd like to make it (or make an adaption of it) sometime next week. We'll see. If I do, I will link back here to let y'all know how it turned out, lol.

As for now, I'm heading off to the kitchen to assemble these: Impossibly Easy Mini Breakfast Sausage Pies

And YES, I can already tell these are going to be adapted and I'll put the recipe up on C4II when I get it written up. Just sausage, onion, mushrooms and cheese? Hmm...and needs a different crust than bisquick since I don't buy it. So yes, needs some tweaking, lol.

OK, later, I'm off to play in the kitchen! Have a great day :)
